A Church for All People

A MESSAGE TO THE MEMBERS OF PLANTATION UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

February 6, 2009

This year the Church Council, our governing leadership group, acting on the advice of our Committee on Finance, has agreed upon a 2009 projected income of $887,000. The chart below reveals that (1) our projected income is down from previous years, and (2) in the past two years our expenses have exceeded our income.

Year End                PUMC Operating Income                   PUMC Expense                     Gain (Loss)
2004                       $1,011,490                                           $1,003,570                           $     7,920
2005                       $1,018,390                                           $   995,448                           $   22,942
2006                       $1,159,245                                           $1,021,535                           $  143,714
2007                       $1,072,570                                           $1,121,813                           $  (77,290)
2008                       $   991,553                                           $1,030,410                           $  (41,424)
2009 proj.            $ 887,000

Based upon the 2009 income projection, and with recent trends in mind, the Council will approve a 2009 expenditure plan at its February 24th meeting. The Committee on Finance, meeting February 17th, will receive expenditure plans from the following leadership teams:

Staff/Pastor – Parish Relations ……………  Clergy, Lay ministry, facility and administrative staff

Board of Trustees ………………………………. Facility care and improvements, insurance and legal                                                                                                     needs

Ministry Leadership Team …………………. Ministry and missions priorities and needs

Administrative Staff …………………………… Office equipment, telecommunication systems,                                                                                                     supplies

Pastors and Lay Delegates …………………. Apportionments: support of our denomination’s                                                                                                     mission and presence around the world

Kids at Play Childcare Center …………….. Direct cash support of operations

Reducing expenditures by more than $140,000 (last year’s actual expenses minus this year’s projected income) will necessitate changes in all areas of our life together:  how we utilize our pastors and staff for ministry and mission, how we provide facility care and offer our facility for church and community group use; our ability to fund ministry groups, provide office support to members and friends, and participate in the worldwide mission of the United Methodist Church.

We ask you to join us in …
(1)    Prayer – We will wait upon the LORD for direction and seek to honor Him in all things;

(2)    Patience – Staff must be advised, counseled and supported personally, and community groups will be consulted regarding changes in our hours of operation, before decisions are announced to the congregation and made public.

(3)    Participation – We call you to offer your time and skills and experience, and to give financially all that you are able, to our church. You are needed as never before to provide leadership and service in all areas of our life together.

Comments and questions; can you volunteer in service? Please contact us at either tsmiley@flumc.org, or at info@pumc.net. May God bless you and our church to be a blessing to others.

In Christ,

Tim Smiley                         David Strickland                                               Debra Kocak

Senior Pastor                     Chairman, Church Council           Chairwoman, Committee on Finance
